The Tweet stops here!

Two recent cases in the US point to an interesting development in the use and ownership of social media content. Both The Washington Post and Agence France Press have been found liable for copyright infringement for unauthorised use of images. The case was complex, with claim and counter claim being made by a number of parties involved, with media companies citing the Twitter terms of service as a defence, in particular the phrase “You retain your rights to any Content you submit, post or display on or through the Services.

The hopeful upshot being that Users own their tweets and third parties copy at their peril.
